Reflection on Mark 9:2-9

Scripture
Six days later, Jesus took Peter, James and John with him. They went up onto a high mountain where they could be alone. There, in front of the disciples, Jesus was completely changed.

Observation
An ordinary day- if any day with Jesus could be called ordinary.

They go up a mountain.

Jesus is changed. Their vision is cleared.

Peter talks rubbish. God breaks through and makes sense: “This is my Son-listen to Him.”

Jesus returns to normal and they go down the mountain.

Application
Mountain-top experiences are confronting when understood correctly.

We may get a new revelation, a new vision of Jesus. We might have a great experience, but the experience is a means not an end.

The end is that we see Jesus for who He really is and start paying attention to Him.

Often people can have wonderful spiritual experiences that go nowhere, because like Peter, they are too busy building memorials to an event instead of learning to listen to God.

But if we listen carefully, God will speak to us in ways that confront, console, convict or convince us. That is where the power of the mountain-top is.

Prayer
Father, teach me how to listen to your voice, to see Jesus as He really is, and to allow your Spirit to transform my heart.

  2. We need to keep our eyes on Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith... not always easy to do!
