The United Nations is to hold a World Conference Against Racism. But in typical UN style, this conference against meanness is being run by some of the meanest:
A key Israeli objection is that the UN committee managing the conference is chaired by Libya, with vice-chairs from Iran, Pakistan, Cuba, Russia, Indonesia and Turkey.
Whilst these counties may be objectionable to Israel their voices should be heard. On a per capita basis no other country comes within cooee of Israel in having it's opinions expressed in the media and influencing western governments. The voices of countries of similar population like Bulgaria, Togo and New Guinea are seldom heard whilst a day never passes without Israel being in or on the news.Israel has just over 7 million people.Pakistan 166 millionIran 70 millionIndonesia 230 millionTurkey 71 millionNo matter what ones personal opinion may be these countries you list have opinions that must be heard and they have a right (population basis) to have a louder voice than Israel. I don't see these countries as mean. One of Australia's top foriegn correspondents rated Iran as their favourite destination because of the hospitality of the people there.
ReplyDeleteThe problem is not the people but the policies of the governments which are notorious for human rights abuses, particularly Libya and Iran.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your comment, however engagement with these countries is likely to result in better outcomes. They are not likely to send a human rights abuser to the conference. The UN is not going to have credability in these countries, if it is dominated by the west. These people have the right to be heard despite what we may think of their government. The only hope of making the world safer is by having better communications, ignorance results in violence. In order to have an influence on human rights abuse we ourselves have to gain the respect of these countries, to do that we have to find other issues on which we can show respect for them.I think it likely Libya would not want Israel chairing the committee either.
