Reflection on Genesis 1:1-5

Scripture
The earth was barren, with no form of life; it was under a roaring ocean covered with darkness. But the Spirit of God [c] was moving over the water.

Observation
This is the type of passage which is so familiar that it is very easy to let it slide past us.

The central message is that from the very beginning God is there, in control, hovering over the chaos that precedes creation.

The world is chaotic and unsuitable for life, but God is there redeeming it all and making it “good.”

Application
When my life seems chaotic, deadly and out of control, God is in control. The Holy Spirit is hovering over my life and directing my ways.

It is good to know that God is able to redeem the most chaotic, out of control situations and turn them around to be “good.” God takes deadly places and makes them suitable for us to thrive and become all that we were created to be.

Prayer
Father, sometimes I find it hard to see just how you are working in my life. I find it easier to see the chaos than the Spirit hovering over it and redeeming it. Help me to believe that you are in control and that you are turning my life into something thast you will call “good.”

  1. We do tend to get so wrapped up in our troubles that we forget that God is not only in charge, but in control.
