Scripture
John the Baptist showed up in the desert and told everyone, “Turn back to God and be baptised! Then your sins will be forgiven.”
Observation
In our cynical age, it's hard to imagine crowds fleeing the cities to hear a desert bound preacher. There was clearly a very profound spiritual hunger in that place which seems lacking in our own time.
The message of John was simple and still remains the same-”Turn back to God, be baptised and your sins will be forgiven” Baptism was never seen as a means of salvation as such, but a sign of the new life which God gives us.
The whole John the Baptist project seems so unlikely. But God chooses the unlikely to bring about his plans.
Application
God doesn't need international venues and glitzy worship centres to bring about his purposes. He can use a weird prophet in the desert. We shouldn't judge ministries by what we see, but by the message they preach and the character they have. God can use an uneducated prophet as much as a teacher with a PhD. The important thing is to have our hearts right with Him, and our spirit tuned to the Holy Spirit.
Prayer
Father may my heart always beat with your passions and my spirit be in tune with you. Help me to be willing to share your gospel in the nice places and in the tough places. Amen.
