Reflection on John 1:35-42
Scripture
When he saw Jesus walking by, he said, “Here is the Lamb of God.”
Observation
John's role was to prepare the way for Jesus. He was to point others to the Lamb of God. So when his followers leave him to follow Jesus, John doesn't mind- that's his job after all.
These two disciples seem quick to follow Jesus. But they know John and if he said Jesus is the Messiah, they trusted his recommendation.
Andrew rushes off to tell his brother the news, “We have found the Messiah.” We often think Peter was the first to make the connection, but clearly his brother beat him to it.
Application
First John, then Andrew, tell others about Jesus. There seems to be a theme of telling others in this passage.
They see Jesus then tell someone else. For some reason, though, many of us who see and know Jesus find it so much harder to invite others to come and see.
We want the words, the method, the theory. In the end it comes down to “We've found the Messiah” or “here is the Lamb of God.” Our actions, lifestyle and attitudes have to provide the rest of the story.
Like John, our role is to prepare the way for the coming of Jesus into the lives of others.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, may I be a faithful witness to you in all that I do. Help me to show others how to find you. Amen.
