Reflection on 1 Corinthians 8:1-13

Scripture
Event though food is offered to idols, we know that none of the idols in this world are alive. After all, there is only one God.

Observation
Paul is very pragmatic in his faith. What he is saying here is that because you have surrendered your life to Christ, you no longer have to worry about petty things like foreign gods and idols. You know there is just one God and He is stronger than dead, powerless idols.

On the other hand, just because you are free to eat meat that has been sacrificed to idols, that does not absolve you from responsibility to those who are weaker in their faith. We need to take care that we do not cause others to stumble in their faith.

Application
Some people seem to be overly sensitive to idols, evil spirits and other things. We do need to be cautious about such things and not allow them to gain spiritual power over us.

But if we become obsessive with the forces of evil, then we have allowed them to take over our primary objective which is to look forward always to Jesus.

We should not live in fear of New Agers, horoscopes and mosques. Rather we need to recognise that Jesus has won the victory over all these things. We can break the spiritual power that they have with just a word of faith.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, you have conquered every spiritual power and defeated every evil spirit. Help us Lord to walk in boldness and confidence knowing that you will always keep us safe. Amen.
