Reflection on 1 Corinthians 6:12-20

Scripture
Some of you say, “We can do anything we want to.” But I tell you that not everything is good for us. So I refuse to let anything have power over me.

Observation
There is a tension between the liberty of the gospel and the responsibility of living a holy life. Jesus abolished the Law with all its decrees, but He did not abolish sin!

As christians, we are no longer under the Law, but we are owned by Chris, and therefore subject to His commands.

I am not free to do just whatever I like. Because God bought me at such a high price, I now have a responsibility to dedicate my whole being to Him, including my body, mind and spirit.

Application
What are the things that hold my thoughts and my body captive? What are the idols that demand my attention in competition with God?

I'm so thankful that God doesn't just sit in judgment over me, demanding I live to a standard I can't possibly meet. Rather he shows me what I should be doing and He convicts me of just one thing at a time.

Prayer
Father, I recognise that I am no longer my own, but yours. Shape me, mould me and change me to be the person you want me to be. Amen.
