Gaza rockets hit Israel despite ceasefire
Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip have launched rockets into southern Israel in defiance of the unilateral ceasefire that Israel declared hours earlier.
"At least five rockets were launched and four hit in open areas near [the Israeli town of] Sderot," an Israeli military spokesman said.
Israel halted its 22-day-old Gaza offensive at 2:00am (local time), saying it had achieved all its objectives but that a troop withdrawal was contingent on Hamas ceasing its fire completely.
Hamas said it would not accept the presence of Israeli soldiers in the Gaza Strip and would "continue to resist them".
Israeli leaders said the military would respond strongly if Hamas kept up attacks.
In the first reported violence after the ceasefire went into effect, Hamas militants shot at Israeli troops near Jabalya refugee camp, an Israeli military spokesman said.

Good that someone is finally reporting the entire story.
ReplyDeleteActually the ABC has been surprisingly even handed. They have reported a fair bit about the Palestinian children in hospitals, but I guess that's to be expected as that is a "good" media story. But at least they have put it into context and consistently shown the reasons for the fighting. That's the news department. Some of the current affairs programmes have been another story as they give more opportunities for the presenters to insert their own commentary.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that article is enough to justify Israel's devastating actions. I also think respect for Israel has gone downhill in the eyes of many western countries. The Palestinians have suffered over a long period of time - loss of land, houses etc with no compensation - restricted supplies of daily essentials. I think the Palestinians have had a raw deal in the face of aggresive expansion by Israel. I agree that the rocket attacks should not continue, they are just making things worse. We would be lost without the ABC and SBS news.
