Scripture
If I were hungry I wouldn't tell you, because I own the world and everything in it. (v.12)
Observation
God is not impressed with human gifts. What can we offer the One who made the indescribable universe in all of it immensity? If it were possible for God to be hungry, would He need the sacrifices and gifts of people? He could just kill a moose or barbecue the cattle on one of those hills he owns.
What God wants from His people is a life of righteousness and thankfulness- in other words a life filled with His LIFE.
Application
God nails all of our religious impulses right here. He is not easily bought, because He owns it anyway. A $50 bribe to a lowly paid police officer might get you off a traffic fine. What could you offer Bill Gates that might buy his attention? What could Bill Gates bring to God that could possibly impress the God who made Bill Gates and the wealth he accumulated?
It is crazy to think this way- yet we do. Not only foes God look right past the gifts we offer Him, He looks straight into our hearts to see why we come to Him. That is why the only sacrifice He is interested in is a life given to Him.
God is looking for a heart relationship. He doesn't want to be bought off- He wants our love.
Prayer
Lord forgive me for being so religious- for thinking that you could be impressed by anything that I offer you apart from my heart. Help me Lord to give you the one true sacrifice- a life lived in your presence and to your glory. Amen.
Great words!
