Reflection on Ruth 4:7-17

This is the first in a series of occasional reflections on Scripture passages. I hope that they are a blessing to you.

Scripture:
“She loves you more than seven sons of your own would love you.”

Observation:
The characters of the people in this story are phenomenal.
Ruth- she was hugely loyal to her mother-in-law, Naomi, with no vested or prior interest. She showed an unwavering love to Naomi and was honoured by the townspeople as one who showed more love than seven of Naomi's own children would have.
Boaz- righteous and compassionate. He used his wealth in a way that honours God. He made sure that Ruth and Naomi were treated properly, but that the property rights of their relatives were also respected,
Obed- Ruth's child by Boaz becomes a grandfather to King David. This is truly a royal and noble family.

Application
God brings great blessing from great suffering. Thee are three deaths in this story, three widows, famine and poverty. God turns all of this into a source of blessing and favour for this family.

The Bible tells us to rejoice even when we are suffering misfortune. God is in control. I often get caught up in the present problems, unable to look beyond the immediate situation. God will bring about blessing from any suffering- we just have to stay faithful and show integrity in the daily grind.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank you for the example of faithful people such as Ruth, Naomi and Boaz. These people just knew how to do the right thing and how to be righteous in the seemingly small details of their lives. From that strength of character, you brought great favour. Help me to walk with that same integrity every day. Amen.
