Earlier in the week a fruit bat took up temporary residence in one of our bottle-brush trees.
Today while walking in the lake, the overcast conditions really accentuated the autumn colours in some of the trees. We don't do autumn very well in Narrabri, so the few leaf changers really stand out.
WOW! Amazing bat! And it looks quite large too. A couple of years ago, I was trying to get a chicken down from the rafters in the shop and a bat fell on my head. It scared the life out of me! I fell off the ladder, then looked to see what it was. He was alive but groggy, probably I woke him up.
ReplyDeleteWe call them flying foxes. They are fruit eaters and often gather in huge numbers, particularly on the coast. We don't often see them here this time of the year- they come through in spring when the native plants are flowering and fruiting. They normally leave before my plums and peaches appear :)They can be a bit of a problem in urban areas when they gather in thousands. The Sydney Botanical Gardens has been using loud noises to distress them to move them on. Fortunately this guy was alone and moved on by his own efforts.
ReplyDeleteThat is very interesting!
