For people in Eastern Australia (excluding Queensland), Daylight Saving Time a.k.a Summer Time starts at 2 a.m. tomorrow. Don't forget to set your alarm so you can get up at the right time to adjust all your clocks, timers, computers, phones etc. (Why does every single appliance come with a clock these days?) Of course you could just do that before you go to bed but where's the fun in that? :D
It feels busy right now. We had the first instalment of the current batch of visitors last night. That wasn't bad, but it was only 3 adults and 2 small children. Monday evening will be fun- I think it's 17 in total staying the night.
Yesterday, we had a plethora of plumbers. We had already contacted Barry Keys to get the air-conditioning serviced in the church. We also noticed yesterday that a small patch of dirt near the church had gone from just being damp all the time to actually turning into a growing puddle. I had for a couple of days suspected that there was a leaky pipe, so it was time to confirm the diagnosis. I dug up the affected area and found the leak- a split in the poly pipe just next to a joiner-- conveniently located just under the edge of the path. The man who had come to check the air conditioner had already told us he was wanting to finish work early so we called our favourite plumber Stuart, who with his off-sider Damo fixed it in half an hour.
So now we have air conditioning in the church (it was 35 C a little while ago) and no leaking pipe outside
Meanwhile, Margaret is thinking of all these things we just need to do today to make things work better - or possibly to make me work better  :)
Yes, we all need to get up at least an hour early tomorrow, to change all the clocks, but first locate the directions on how to reset said clocks. I have to admit, I did the lazy thing - I pulled the plug on the coffee maker so at least we will have coffee at approximately the right time when I turn it on manually! We need to have it on automatic, because sometimes Arthur turns it on when he gets up. That could be any time. 2:30, 4:00, 6:15.... maybe 7am because he doesn't look at the clock first. So the coffee is either cold or not made if we leave it on manual!
ReplyDeleteLife is so complicated Lois :)I like making coffee for morning tea after church, but we didn't do it for ages because I would forget to turn it on in time, and then by the time it had done its thing, most people had drunk their instant coffee. A couple of weeks ago I had a brainwave- plug it into a timer and set it to turn on between 10.30 and 11 and it would be ready by the time church finishes.I usually make bread for Communion. I set up the bread maker on Saturday night so that it finishes cooking at 9 am, giving it time to cool and be put out before church. This usually works out fine, except when yours truly forgets to add an ingredient... flour, water, yeast- how hard can that be? Sunday morning I got into church to find that the dry mix was not going to rise. Then I had to find the instruction manual to find out how to reset the timer so I could start over- this time with water. :)
ReplyDeleteOh you old people and your inability to operate this new-fangled technology. I was operating the the VCR at 3 and teaching grandma how to use her video camera at 4. :P
ReplyDeleteComputers? Phones? I didn't have to change any of either..
ReplyDeleteMy PDA with Windows Mobile 5 didn't know that the dates of Daylight Saving had changed-there's probably an update somewhere. Most of my computers were OK, except the bookshop one which doesn't matter that much. Margaret's old Nokia phone doesn't have the facility to get its time form the network so it was a manual change, and many people seem to not know to set their phone to network time. Our fairly modern fax machine has a menu setting for DST that just adds an hour to the time. Our PABX phone system also has a time setting that has to be adjusted, but that would involve an hour-long search for the manual so I'll leave that one.Car clocks built into the stereo systems are about the worst because there is always some really arcane combination of buttons to be pressed and no obvious rhyme or reason to it all. Then there are the clocks you don't notice you have until you go to use an appliance and you think "that time's not right, but could I be bothered to change it?"
ReplyDelete"operating the VCR at 3". Good!!! I'll know who to call next time I move my VCR. Last time I had to call my son, but I ended up on speaker phone with a room full of his friends laughing very loud! I guess I'm not the only one who has a problem with this. Finally, I had to take a picture of the back of the TV and the back of the VCR and emailed them to him. He called me back and gave great instructions, "move the thingamigger on the right over to the yellow whatyoumaycallit, then put the red one beside the white one to keep it company. I don't dare touch it now!
ReplyDeleteLOL! Lois that is so funny! Don't bother calling Phil- you would get exactly the same result :)Phil didn't mention that he could also start games on the Commodore 64 at about 3. You would often here him sitting at the computer laboriously saying as he touched each key L-O-A-D- Shift and 2- STAR-Shift and 2- COMMA- 8- COMMA- 1 then the triumphant "Return!" He is very gifted electronically
