I've just been reading some blogs by people who describe themselves as "detoxing from church".
It's true that the church can be toxic- any group of people can become destructive, especially if God is removed from the equation!
People sometimes let their insecurities, fears, religious spirits, even bigotry and outright SIN get in the way of the love of God. And then the thing we call the Body of Christ becomes leprous, toxic, destructive.
How do we stay clear of this malaise?
Firstly keep Jesus at the centre of the church. It should be obvious shouldn't it? But how often do we go through our programmes, activities, groups without even giving a thought to Jesus?
Secondly remember the great commandments- love God with everything you have and your neighbour as yourself... that means the christians in the church, the christians in other churches and not-yet-christians.
Thirdly always give more than you take.
Fourthly, read rule number 1 again! Church is not about you, it's about Jesus. It's not about the music or the preaching or the offering or even the coffee- it's all about Jesus.
I'm passionate about Jesus and the church. I love them both more each day.
I don't need to detox from a toxic lifestyle! The love of Jesus will keep you and sustain you and refresh your vision.
Stir up that passion today!
Blessings
Keith
