The scary bit is that I was on this section of road (the Newell Highway) yesterday, coming home from Rockhampton!
From ABC News:
Two children from northern New South Wales, who decided to visit their grandfather, drove the family car alone to his house at Moree, nearly 100 kilometres away.
The pair, aged ten and six-years-old, were with their grandmother at Boggabilla when they decided on the trip.
They reached speeds of 90-kilometres-an-hour on one of Australia's busiest heavy transport routes and had travelled 85 kilometres before police were able to pull them over.
The children immediately jumped into their usual seats in the back of the car, but forgot to put the automatic in park and it began to take off by itself down the highway before the 10-year-old jumped back into the driver's seat to apply the brakes.
The tearful pair were taken to Moree police station where they were given a stern talking to by officers, before being reunited with their grandfather.
