Reflection on Isaiah 9:2-7

Scripture
For a child is born to us
a son is given to us.
The government will rest on his shoulder
And he will be called
Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Observation
Isaiah looks forward to the Messiah. Light is coming in to the darkness- hope and peace in a place of despair and violence. God will intervene and remove the oppressor.

This redemption will come through a child who will start an unending kingdom. He will rule for ever with fairness and justice.

Application
It is Jesus who is our hope. People put their hope in all kinds of false things- work, possessions, family, fame. None of these will do it for us.

It is Jesus who brings meaning to our lives. It is Jesus who will change our hearts from violence to peace, from selfishness to love, from corruption to purity.

A baby is born and the world lights up in expectation of a sacrifice that will change billions of lives.

Prayer
Father as we approach Christmas and the celebration of the coming of Jesus, we remember also his death and resurrection. Thank you for setting me free from sin and for the gift of a new life. Amen.
