Reflection on 1 Corinthians 12:1-11

Scripture
But it is the Spirit who does all this and decides which gifts to give to each of us.

Observation
In all of his writings about spiritual gifts, Paul is always careful to place them in the context of the unity of the Body of Christ. The Holy Spirit is given to build up the church, to bring us to maturity and unity in Christ.

The gifts of the Holy Spirit take various forms, but whatever form a particular manifestation takes, it is the same Spirit.

Application
The gifts in v 7-10 are often called the Manifestation Gifts. Contrary to what many modern translations suggest, the intent of this passage is that these are gifts or abilities given as needed. They are not gifts that “belong” to a person as such, but ways in which the Holy Spirit works at a particular time. Today the need might be for a word of wisdom, tomorrow a healing. If I am receptive to the Holy Spirit, I can move in those ministries as needed.

The key is being responsive to the Holy Spirit. I need to have a close relationship with the Holy Spirit, being prepared to listen to the still small voice and then obeying what He tells me to do.

Prayer
Holy Spirit, come and fill me. Teach me how to minister in your power and grow me in these graces. Amen.
