Wonderful Rain

We have just had another 9 mm of rain today, taking our total for this month to 46 mm (the September average is 42 mm). This is the first time since February that our actual rain has exceeded the long term average in any month.

  1. Congratulations!!! I saw a documentary on television about how dry it was in Australia and has been for 6 years.

  2. It's been patchy. The media tend to go for the worst affected places and then generalise it to make it look like the whole country hasn't seen rain for years. We've had more or less below average rainfall in most places for several years. Coastal parts (at least the east coast where the majority of the population are), have had a couple of good years so that dams for most of the major cities are at reasonable levels. The situation inland hasn't been as good. The big irrigation dams are at low levels which means the irrigation industries such as cotton, fruit orchards etc have been doing it tough. Most years we have been blessed by sufficient rain to keep the crops alive, even though it's been below average rain. Right now where we are the fields are looking really great- everything is very green. But just a little to the west they are still badly affected by the drought.Traditionally, droughts are ended by widespread flooding. We haven't seen that yet, but I suspect it won't be far off.

  3. Yes, that's the media for you! Glad to hear you're having enough rain to keep things so lush. I hope the other folks get the rain they need too.
