I'm very proud of my daughter (and my sons too, but this isn't about them!)
Susannah is studying Dance and for her Third Year Project decided to form a dance company for young people in the country to celebrate their rural upbringing and to develop their skills. She has been working with them since the beginning of the year and today was the climax- a performance in the park in the context of a community event.
The dancers were beautiful, the choreography brilliant and even non-dance people understood what it was about.
It was just a superb day.
I've uploaded some photos into the "Dance In The Park" album
You've certainly been able to convey what a great time everyone had in your photos. The dancers are so elegant and graceful. It looks like you had a very nice picnic afterwards!
ReplyDeleteLois, the next morning I'm still on a high (even at 6.30 am!). I find events like this are an expression of the Kingdom of God, even when they aren't particularly "christian". This was a community event not a church event- even though christians were the main organisers. The dancers weren't all christians, as far as I know. The audience certainly weren't.The dancers elegantly expressed their love for growing up in this community and their appreciation for God's creation. It was the culmination of hundreds of hours of hard work for them and for Susannah. We all had a good time with no chemical additives (except possibly the preservatives in the sausages!), nothing salacious or demeaning of anyone.Margaret & I saw this as a step in a long-term dream that we have of seeing Narrabri as a centre for christian arts. I've got no idea what happens next, but God will bring it together.I think also it was an important step in taking dance into the community and saying that it's not just about an elite who look at these things in darkened halls. One of the remarkable things was that Susannah briefly explained (a couple of sentences) what the three dances were about and you could see that people, even non-dance people, could see what the movement was for... you could see little light bulbs going on over heads everywhere!A wonderful morning.
ReplyDeleteIt's wonderful to see people, Christian or not, using the talents God gave them for something constructive, something beautiful and then sharing the product of those talents. It draws us in and makes us feel part of the great work they have done.
ReplyDeleteI agree Lois.
