Great Train Show

I've just been listening to the ABC Radio Great Train Show with former Deputy PM Tim Fischer.

I'm not a train "nut" as such although I do have a bit of a passing interest. I've found this show very interesting as there is a series of short stories and anecdotes about trains from Australia and around the world. The first show features the "Lunatic Line" from Mombasa to Nairobi- the greatest occupational hazard for workers on this railway was being eaten by lions.

You can download individual episodes or subscribe to the series as a podcast here

  1. It looks very interesting, however, I don't know anything about podcasting. Is it something difficult? Or expensive?

  2. Lois it's dead easy! There are two options- one is manual the other automatic (but requires different software). The manual option is to go to the page in your normal web browser and right click on the various links. The other option just involves using slightly different software (like iTunes) in which you copy and paste the links that you are interested in and it checks every few hours if there is an update, automatically downloads you and notifies you. This link has more information about podcasts generally, suitable software and links to the huge range of programmes that the ABC has- but it's a whole section of the internet in its own right, nearly as big as the normal internet. The link is:http://www.abc.net.au/services/podcasting/help.htmI use linux as my operating system and the music player that I choose to use, rhythmbox, incorporates a podcatcher so it does its thing while I'm listening to music. Every so often it puts up a little notification on the screen that it has downloaded something. Most of these I transfer every week or so to my portable player to listen to while I garden or walk
