Reading Scripture Effectively

Two weeks ago, i preached about listening to God through the Scriptures. In that sermon, I mentioned the Bible reading method devised by Wayne Cordeiro and described in his book "The Divine Mentor."

Here is a summary of the method which uses the acronym SOAP

In this approach, journalling is central. I can testify to the positives in writing down our thoughts, because it forces us to move slowly, to think and mediate on what we are reading. Write out full sentences, not notes, and avoid abbreviations- again the purpose is to slow down our tendency to rush on too quickly.

Firstly, write down the date and the scripture reference at the top of the page. Then read the entire passage slowly.

S: Scripture- write out one verse from the passage which is really speaking to you today.

O: Observation- write out some thoughts about the meaning of the passage, or just things which grab your attention.

A: Application- what is God saying to me today about something I need to do, changes I need to make, people I need to talk to etc. It may be something really specific or a principle or pattern for living that I need to take on board.

P: Prayer- write out a short prayer.

After this is completed, write a title for the thoughts of the day. He also recommends maintaining a table of contents at the front of the journal with the date, title and page number. This makes it easier to refer back later.

Only when we have let God speak to us directly through the word should we turn to our devotional book or commentary for extra thoughts.

I've been using this method since the beginning of the year, and I have found it really useful. I hope this helps you also.

  1. That's certainly on the mark. I've always made notes in my Bible and I'm so glad for the times that I was thorough in my notes. Some, unfortunately, where I did abbreviate, I really don't know what I meant. Many of the notes I wrote go back over 30 years. The best one I have is in the front of my Bible and it says, "Give Him the best".

  2. I'm a bit obsessive with books- I don't like folding corners, bending spines or writing in them. So I'm reluctant to make notes in a Bible. Give me a blank book with lines and call it a journal and I'll write till the cows come home!
