Safest year on roads since World War II


SAFER cars, better roads and driver education campaigns have been credited with a dramatic drop in the number of deaths on NSW roads over the past year.

Preliminary figures show 445 people were killed on the state's roads last year, about 10 per cent fewer than 2006.

It was the lowest rate since 1945 despite a doubling of the state's population and 13 times as many vehicles on the road. It was a vast reduction on the state's peak of 1384 road deaths in 1978.
