This morning we bought an Eee lap top computer.
I am very impressed. For $495 you get a linux based computer with all the necessary software- open office, web browser, email, games, educational software- the works.
It comes with a wireless network card as well as a wired network card, modem, USB ports, and a slot for various format memory cards.
It is lightning fast- certainly compared with my old second hand P2 lap top- and very very light.
I am going to enjoy getting to know this new piece of technology. It's brilliant!
Congratulations!! I'm sure you will enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteIt will keep me out of mischief for hours!
ReplyDelete:lol: That's what my husband said when he bought me a new camera! I told him either that or it would get me into mischief!
ReplyDeleteNow you'll just have to install Vista on it 8-D<ducking now>
ReplyDeleteWash your mouth out Greg. The manual does come with instructions to install XP for those unable to cope with a real operating system. I don't know why you would want to do that- apart from the obvious "because you can." The built in inux OS, together with the apps suppplied, mean you can do anything you would ever want to on a compact machine. It doesn't have enough RAM or video capability to run action games which is the only reason most people say they can't give up windows. Also it takes a reasonable amount of technical confidence to follow the instructoions. There is a windows video driver which makes it possible to run a higher resolution display. I susoect that's possible by changing the X configuration, but I'll wait for advice from Tim before I risk that!So far I've modified the system by changing it to run a normal desktop (KDE), because the Easy desktop is too hard to install launchers for extra software. I've also installed opera which I prefer over Firefox. After several hours of playing, I'm still very impressed with it.Still to do: install aspell so I can do spell checking in opera, install claws mail (my favourite email client).
ReplyDeleteJust about got everything set up perfectly. One of the major steps was to modify the sources.list file to add access to more software repositories. I also had to make a preferences file to make sure that any core software was not overwritten by incompatible versions. That makes me sound like some kind of super-geek, but basically I copied and pasted from instructions at http://wiki.eeeuser.com/ then did some editing to apply them to my situation. If you have to be on holiday in the rain, it's good to have a new toy to play with!
