Google has rolled out a new feature on its mapping service that will allow users to easily embed maps directly into web pages.
The feature will operate in much the same way as the embedding feature for YouTube videos - you just copy and paste a snippet of HTML code into your blog or website and there it is: your own customised map on your own site.
It's a logical extension of another mapping feature called My Maps that Google introduced in April. My Maps allows users to customise maps by tracing routes, defining areas, adding text and hyperlinks and adding info pins that can pop-up photos and videos.
So you could, for instance, create a map of driving directions to your home, office or favourite park. Or you could make a map of your recent holiday in Europe - anything that lends itself to a map treatment.
The maps are fully interactive. You can choose the size and then drag it around, zoom in and out and toggle between the map, satellite or hybrid views.
It's just the latest enhancement on what is an increasingly popular service, the Australian version of which was launched in May.
So let's see if it works:
I went to Google Maps, found New Life and placed a marker on the map. I saved it under "My Maps" and then clicked on the "Link to this page" link. Then I copied this link to my clipboard and pasted it below
So let's see how it worked!

Well as you can see, it didn't work. I tried it on my own web-site and it's brilliant. It just doesn't seem to work yet on the my.opera site. I'm sure that will get fixed soon.
