I've just discovered something about myself that I've known for a long time... I find it hard to do nothing sitting in my office!
You see, for some months now I've been downloading meditations from Pray As You Go. these are a daily meditation consisting of a bible reading, music and some reflections on the passage. They are VERY good.
Normally I listen to these on my mp3 player as I do things like gardening or whatever. But I was getting way behind, even though I like listening and reflecting. So last night I decided to start each morning by listneing to the reflection for the day on my computer.
Have you got any idea how hard it is to sit in front of a computer actually listening to the sounds it's making and trying not to think of the 100 things you have to do? I could feel knots forming in my stomach from the stress of it!
So I've learned a new spiirutal disciple- sitting still, thinking about God and focussing on Him and not on the things I do for Him.[/color]
I have occasional bouts of involvement with contemplative prayer. I find it incredily beneficial. Dunno if the benefits are purely psychological (as per the benefits of meditation) or if they are spiritual as well, but it is certainly quite powerful.OTOH I find the "do nothing" stuff thing somewhat taxing.
