How Australia tries to evade our responsibilities...

In clumsy attempts to pander to reservoirs of resentment and fear, the two main parties have made a stupendous hash of their refugee policies.
Tony Abbott's desperation has taken him all over the place. Under his regime the navy will be delegated the discretion to tow boats of ''unlawful non-citizens'' back to sea. At the same time, asylum seekers who have ''deliberately'' destroyed their identity papers will be sent home. We're none the wiser how immigration officials will be able to decipher between deliberation and inadvertence.
Julia Gillard's East Timor policy is the unsightly mess that comes with crashing headlong into a hurdle rather than elegantly leaping it. For all the tiresome braggadocio and squawking passing for ''debate'', majority public opinion has not shifted in the past 20 years or so. ...
