Flock Flops

One of the internet browsers with the most potential that I've yet to see is Flock

Yet it just consistently disappoints me. Something comes up and I think "I'll give flock a go on that", and I try it and find it just doesn't quite get there.

It's great on news feeds (RSS). But oh so slow. I have about 120 feeds that i subscribe to and opera gets through them all in less than a minute. Flock displays them really nicely but it's as slow as a wet week!

Flock has great connections with social networking sites. As I've just started with facebook I thought I'd try that. It will let me log into facebook on a normal page but the actual widget that puts all your friends on the sidebar won't log in.

Very frustrating.

So I'm still finding Opera is faster and more reliable than any other browser out there. It would be nice to have a facebook panel though!

  1. Try Flock 2.0, it's faster than 1.0 (Flock 2.0 is based on Firefox 3) :)If you still find it slow, I suggest you try digsby (www.digsby.com). Digsby is a multi-protocol chat client that can also be linked to various social web sites like facebook and twitter. I use it with Opera all the time and find it very efficient.

  2. I'm back to Flock 2 today, after some instability issues with Opera. It would be so nice to have one browser that does exactly what I want the way I want to do it! :D

  3. Yeah, it would certainly be nice to have such browser. Unfortunately, it is not very possible unless you start coding yourself ;)On the other hand, you have tons and tons of Mozilla extensions, so, in a way, you can customize your browser the way you want it.

  4. Yes that's right.I am enjoying flock at the moment so all of those FF extensions are available. It's big lack IMO is the inability to have named searches. For example in Opera to search Google images I just type image then what I want to search for and it opens the results page. There's probably a FF extension that does that, but I'd have to go looking for it.BTW I tried the digsby site and discovered that it's only available for Win at the moment- clicking the penguin takes you to a "Coming Soon" page.

  5. "Ask and it will be given to you..." ~Matthew 7:7 ;)If you want to have a custom search word, just right click on the web site's search field and choose "Add a keyword for this search", choose the keyword and save it as a bookmark. Voila! Now, whatever you want to search using that website, just type in the keyword in the address bar and then the text you want to find. Also, there is an extension that does exactly the same thing that Opera already has built in PLUS you can select your own icon for the search: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3682I hope it helps.

  6. Thanks for that. I thought Flock could do that but I couldn't find it.
