New Camera

At my birthday party last week, people gave generously to buy me a new camera. I was really blessed to receive enough to buy a Canon S5 iS

I ordered it online late yesterday afternoon and received it this morning.

This afternoon I gave it a bit of a test drive. I am amazed at its capabilities. Most impressive is the zoom factor (12x) which I used to fullest extent today. In the coming days I will explore sports mode, night time mode and super-macro mode. It's going to be fun!

Here are some that I took today.

I caught Margaret in one of her favourite poses.

This was taken from our bedroom.

This is an amazing shot across the lake. The anti-shake mode in the camera means that even at high magnification you get very sharp photos- even on a windy day. You won't see this on this file, because it's been compressed, but I zoomed in the original on my computer and the reeds on the far side of the lake are very sharply outlined. Awesome!

This last photo of the mountains is a shot I've wanted to take on many occasions, but the old camera couldn't quite carry it off!

  1. The Canon S5 iS looks like a wonderful camera. You've taken some great shots too! You must be very, very happy with it. Congratulations!

  2. Yes Lois, I'm thrilled to bits! When I was younger, newly married and well paid I used to have a Konica SLR with a wonderful Tokina telescopic lens. I took some really beautiful photos with it. Trouble with film was always the processing costs. I was always careful not to waste too many shots. Then a few years ago I had an opportunity to buy a Fuji Finepix digital pocket camera, which was also an amazing bit of technology, but was a little limited in its abilities- I could never take photos of insects and birds like you have, for example.I realised yesterday, that in dollar terms the new camera cost a little more than the Fuji and if you allow for inflation it's probably about the same. That just shows how far the technology has come in 4 or 5 years. Many hours of fun ahead I think  BTW Lois, the second last photo shows a black swan (a bit hard to see in the image). I don't think we get them here terribly often. In Australia we have only the black species. I don't know if they are as aggressive as the white swans.

  3. Oh I see it!! Where I lived in Canada - it was a town called, Stratford and was modelled after Stratford-upon-Avon in England. Tons of Shakespeare and a Shakespearian theatre - the works, so they had swans on the "Avon" River that ran through town. We started with the white ones, then the city purchased a pair of black ones. Quite the novelty!! They are beautiful to look at, but I saw so many kids with such bad bites from the white ones that I began to really dislike them. Never realized that the black ones were nicer! Are yours wild then?? I'm sure you will thoroughly enjoy your camera. I love mine - it's like the last child or something!
